Clinical Information
The DM Orthotics Shoulder Stability Orthosis fits closely to the shoulder giving the required proprioceptive feedback as well as stability to the weakened area making shoulder setting easier to achieve and maintain. As a result exercise is more effective and the rehabilitation process is quicker.
Abstract
The painful subluxed shoulder is a notoriously difficult clinical problem to manage across a variety of patient groups. A number of treatment strategies have been proposed which generally have mixed success. Bespoke Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric Orthosis (DEFOs) represent an emerging treatment strategy for movement and postural control problems. Their use in the management of the painful subluxed shoulder has not however been previously documented.
The case report provides a brief account of a young man with a painful subluxed shoulder as a result of a manual injury. At the end of the initial period of conservative management, the clinical problem had worsened, hindering the prospects for further active rehabilitation. A DEFO was prescribed for this client to provide physical support and facilitate physical activity.

Pavlik Harness
A soft bracing system for the treatment of Hip Dysplasia
The DM Orthotic Pavlik Harness:
- A specially designed soft brace
- Keeps hips flexed and abducted
- Keeps femoral head in the correct position
- Encourages bones to grow normally
Hip dysplasia is used to describe a range of conditions from a hip that is mildly dysplastic, centrally located and stable, to one that is severely dysplastic and dislocated.
In children younger than 6 months the conventional treatment of dysplasia is bracing.
The DM Orthotic Pavlik Harness can be worn
- From birth where the hip is unstable
- In older infants where there is subluxation or actual dislocation of the hip
The degree of flexion and abduction can be adjusted according to the specific needs of the child.
The colour coded straps help for ease of re-application.
The DM Orthotic Pavlik Harness is available with or without bootees.
The Pavlik Harness is available in the following sizes
| Chest Circumference | |
|---|---|
| X-Small | 25 - 34 cm |
| Small | 35 - 43 cm |
| Medium | 44 - 52 cm |
| Large | 53 - 61 cm |
The DM Orthotic Peanut Pillow
A positioning pillow for the new born
As designed by neonate physiotherapists will
- Support the baby's head
- Help to keep it centred
- Promote midline position of head and upper extremeties
- Helps bonding by promoting eye contact
- Prevents plagiocephaly
New born babies find it difficult to centre their heads for long. When lying on their backs they characteristically lie with their heads to one side or the other.
In premature infants head preference to the right is a common problem and this is reinforced through prolonged stays in NICU where the majority of care givers are right handed.
Cranial moulding correlated to restricted intrauterine environment, birth trauma, torticollis, positioning, lack of full bone mineralisation, or neurological deficits can all contribute to the development of an asymmetrical, or elongated head shape in new born or premature infants.
Research strongly supports repositioning of infants to improve cranial vault symmetry. Nursing interventions to prevent cranial moulding include alternative mattress surfaces, supportive positioning and regular changes of position.
For safe and effective use of the peanut pillow we recommend that
- The flat portion of the pillow is placed under the baby's head
- The pillow is only used when the baby is awake and lying on its back
- That you do not leave the baby unattended or sleeping with the pillow
Contour V
A new approach to night time positioning
- Positional Symmetry
- Post abductor tenotomy surgery
- Child able to roll over due to dynamic design
- Can be made to measure
- Available in 4 sizes & Two Versions
Good night - time positioning is seen by many as the complementary 'therapy' to a daytime positioning /seating / treatment regime for children and adolescents with special needs.
The Contour "V" sleep shorts can be used for post operative positioning and where improved symmetrical positioning is required. They are designed to hold children dynamically in an achievable symmetrical sleeping position. It provides a long term, low level pressure, which gently guides the lower limbs into a symmetrical position, reducing "scissor positioning" by utilising the unique design and materials.
- Easy to apply
- Breathable fabric
- Fits over night wear
- Two versions - Abduction & Adduction
- Available in 4 sizes
- Comfortable fit, while still allowing the legs to be 'dynamically held' in abduction or adduction (depending on which version is required)
The Contour V is available in the following sizes
| Circumferences (mm) | Lengths (mm) | ||||
| Hip | Waist | Above Waist to Waist | Waist to Knee | ||
| X-Small | 450 (550)* | 400 | 60 | 300 | |
